Infertility Q & A

What is infertility?

Infertility is the inability to achieve pregnancy after having unprotected sex for a year or longer.

Infertility issues may occur due to health issues in the female partner, male partner, or both. Female infertility can result if there’s dysfunction in the ovaries, uterus, or other reproductive organs. Conditions that can contribute to female infertility include:

  • Fibroids
  • Endometriosis
  • Hormone imbalance
  • Fallopian tube blockage
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
  • Premature ovarian insufficiency (premature menopause)

Nova Women’s Health provides compassionate, personalized care to diagnose and treat the underlying cause of infertility. The providers work closely with you to help you navigate infertility challenges and achieve your dream of starting a family.

When should I schedule an infertility consultation?

You can schedule an infertility consultation at Nova Women’s Health if you can’t become pregnant after at least a year of unprotected sex. For women aged 35 and older, infertility may be an issue if you can’t become pregnant after six months of unprotected sex.

You may also benefit from a diagnostic evaluation if you can get pregnant but can’t carry a viable pregnancy to term.

The providers use state-of-the-art technology to assess the health and function of your ovaries, uterus, fallopian tubes, and other reproductive organs. They also offer in-office lab work to check your hormone levels.

If your tests don’t reveal any causes of infertility, the providers discuss your options for getting your male partner tested.

How is infertility treated?

Your treatment plan for infertility depends on its underlying cause. The Nova Women’s Health team may prescribe medications to regulate your menstrual cycle, shrink large fibroids, or stimulate ovulation.

If you have large fibroids or a blockage in your fallopian tubes or other organ, you may need minimally invasive surgery to remove it. The providers specialize in laparoscopic surgery techniques that are less invasive than traditional open surgery.

The Nova Women’s Health providers can also discuss your options for assisted reproductive strategies like artificial insemination and in-vitro fertilization to help you achieve a healthy pregnancy. They can also refer you to an infertility specialist for additional care.
