Laboratory Services Q & A

What are laboratory services?

Laboratory services are diagnostic and screening tests performed in a lab setting. Typical lab services include:

  • Blood tests
  • Cellular sample tests such as Pap smear

Nova Women’s Health has a brand-new facility with state-of-the-art equipment to give their patients access to the best laboratory services in the same place where they get excellent women’s health care.

When do I need laboratory services?

Some of the specific types of lab services you may need at some point are:

  • Metabolic profile to check blood sugar, electrolytes, calcium levels, and more
  • Complete blood count to screen for problems like anemia
  • Lipid profile to check your cholesterol levels
  • Hormone blood panel to look for hormone imbalances (particularly in menopause)
  • Urinalysis to check for urinary tract infections (UTIs)
  • Pap smear to screen for cervical cancer
  • Human papillomavirus (HPV) test to screen for HPV (may occur alongside Pap smear)
  • Sexually transmitted disease (STD) testing (blood and urine tests)
  • Blood type and Rh factor testing during early pregnancy
  • Pregnancy screening for tuberculosis (TB), rubella, hepatitis, and other diseases

Laboratory services are usually a part of all well-woman exams, and you’ll also have them at several points during pregnancy. In addition, you could need lab testing if you experience new issues, for example, excessive bleeding during your periods.

What happens after I use laboratory services?

Your laboratory services usually occur during a scheduled appointment, although you might occasionally visit the Nova Women’s Health office specifically for testing. Depending on the type of test you had, you might get results within minutes, with a common example being a UTI test.

Other tests may take up to a few days. The office contacts you immediately when results are ready. You’ll either get the results by phone or schedule an appointment to discuss the lab tests in more detail with the medical providers at Nova Women’s Health.

In some cases, your lab test results might indicate a need for further testing. Or, you might need to start a treatment, like antibiotics to manage an infection.

Nova Women’s Health understands your medical needs as a woman, and they focus on making laboratory services accessible for you. Schedule your appointment online or call the office to arrange a visit with the caring women’s health professionals now.
