Ultrasound Q & A

What is ultrasound?

Ultrasound is an imaging test that uses sound wave technology to create images of your internal organs.

During a test, the ultrasound technician uses a tool called a transducer that sends sound waves into your body. These sound waves bounce off your internal body parts and back to the transducer. The information is then sent to a computer that translates the sound waves into moving images.

Ultrasound is one of the safest imaging tests, which is why the OB/GYNs at Nova Women’s Health use it during pregnancy.

I’m pregnant. When do I have my first ultrasound?

Your OB/GYN at Nova Women’s Health can tell you when you start ultrasound testing during pregnancy. Usually, they do your first ultrasound at your first prenatal care appointment. This imaging test confirms pregnancy and helps estimate your due date.

They do the second ultrasound during the second trimester. The purpose of this ultrasound is to evaluate the baby and your reproductive organs.

You may also have additional ultrasounds for other pregnancy-related screening tests, such as the chorionic villus sampling (CVS), which is a test that checks for chromosomal abnormalities.

Why would I need a gynecological ultrasound?

Pregnancy isn’t the only time you might need ultrasound testing. Nova Women’s Health uses ultrasound imaging to evaluate reproductive organs and diagnose common gynecological conditions such as:

  • Ovarian cysts
  • Fibroids
  • Ectopic pregnancy

Ultrasound testing can also check for structural abnormalities and confirm or rule out the cause of your abnormal bleeding. They also use ultrasound to check the placement of an intrauterine device (IUD).

What can I expect during an ultrasound?

There are two types of ultrasound tests your provider at Nova Women’s Health may perform: transabdominal or transvaginal ultrasound.

Transabdominal ultrasound

The transabdominal ultrasound is a noninvasive imaging test that evaluates your reproductive organs by moving a transducer across the abdomen. This is the most common type of ultrasound performed during pregnancy.

Transvaginal ultrasound

For a transvaginal ultrasound, the technician uses a special transducer that goes into the vagina. This imaging test may provide more detailed images of your reproductive organs, helping to confirm or rule out a gynecological condition.
